Tottenham Hotspur will exercise their option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract by another year.

The Belgian defender’s contract is scheduled to expire at the end of this season but the North London giants do have the option to extend it for a further year. The player was the subject of strong Interest from a number of clubs and now will be available for a meagre £25m in the summer.

The former Atletico Madrid defender nearly left the club but went on to stay and since then has established himself as a pivotal part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans. His astute leadership in the Spurs backline has been of immense help as they are currently in the second place in the Premier League.

The defender is likely to attract a lot of attention in the transfer market but Spurs should receive an offer 14 days prior to the end of the transfer window otherwise the clause won’t be valid.

Spurs have been pretty consistent and have emerged as a serious title contender this season. Having made a great start to this term losing the defender could be a big blow to their title aspirations.
