Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Waye Rooney may have already hit his peak.

Rooney, now 28, will play in his 5th major international tournament when he goes to Brazil with England this summer, but has failed to impress on the world stage since Euro 2004.

And despite baging 19 goals for club United last season, Scholes thinks Rooney may be ‘worn out’ and suffering from a non-stop career under the limelight.

“There’s a chance he’s worn out. Wayne’s peak may have been a lot younger than what we’d expect of footballers traditionally. Age 28 or 29 has been the normal ‘peak’.

“With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 goals in 2011/12 when he was 26.”

“Wayne was in the Everton team when he was just 16, since then he has played in Euro 2004, two World Cups and a Champions League every season for United.”

Scholes believes that the way for Rooney to go could be into midfield, a position Scholes himself is very familiar with.

“Wayne might be a player who’d retire come 31 or 32, given the amount of football he’s played. I don’t think he will be able to play centre forward until he’s 34 or 35.”

“But he could play centre midfield, possibly, into his mid-thirties. He’s got the ability to take over my old position at United.”
