Red Devils want to sign centre-back

Manchester United have reportedly asked Real Madrid about the possibility of signing centre-back Raphael Varane.

The two clubs are thought to be in discussions over the future of David De Gea, with negotiations still going on for the goalkeeper, but according to reports, United have also brought up the availability of the French defender.

Long-Term Premier League Interest

Louis Van Gaal is in the market for a new defender after heavily relying on youth players last season due to lack of numbers, and Varane has been on United’s radar for sometime now.

The Red Devils may face competition however from Chelsea, who are also long-term admirers of the young centre-back.

In fact, it was Jose Mourinho who gave Varane his Real Madrid opportunity by signing him for the club, before going on to label him as one of the best young defenders in the world.

Second-Fiddle in Spain

However, the 22-year-old’s game-time is currently limited at the Bernabeu due to Sergio Ramos and Pepe‘s formidable partnership, leaving Varane on the bench for the majority of the season.

The centre-back wanted to hold future talks with Carlo Ancelotti late last year, but nothing came from them, leaving uncertainty surrounding his future in Spain.

Madrid now have a new boss in Rafael Benitez, so it’s not yet understood what Varane’s future plans are with a new manager at the Bernabeu, but it looks like United remain interested.
