Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is left fearing that midfielder Samir Nasri could be facing a long time on the sidelines after he was stretchered off during their 2-0 victory over Newcastle United this afternoon.

The 26-year-old Frenchman was wrecklessly hacked down by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa near the end of a very heated encounter and after the game, Pellegrini confirmed that they could be without the midfielder for a long time.

Nasri will be sent for scans on Monday, so they won’t know the full extent of the injury until then, but first fears are that it could be serious ligament damage.

Pellegrini said: ‘It should have been a red card for the tackle by Yanga-Mbiwa on Samir Nasri. A direct red card – we didn’t have any extra help from the referee today.

‘Nasri has a serious injury with his knee – it was directly a red card.

‘Maybe it’s medial ligaments. We’ll see tomorrow (Monday) what happens with him.’ Nasri left St James’ Park with his knee in a brace.
