Thibaut Courtois has said that his future will not be decided until after the World Cup- and has again insisted that in order for him to go back to Chelsea he needs to be playing no.1 ahead of Petr Cech.

Courtois has spent 3 years on-loan at Atletico Madrid where he has developed into one of the world’s best young goalkeepers, and played a key role in Atletico’s success this season as they won La Liga and got to the Champions League final. This has increased speculation over his future as Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho weighs up whether to bring Courtois back to Stamford Bridge or keep the faith in Petr Cech.

Cech has been Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper for the last decade, but could find himself having to give way for a goalkeeper 10 years younger than him.

Courtois has also said that his future will only be decided once he has finished representing Belgium at the World Cup in Brazil this summer,

“When will I know about my future? It will be after the World Cup I think, then everything will be clear,: he said.

“I spoke to him (Mourinho) in May, before the game against Barcelona. In the week he discussed with me what he thinks about me and about everything. That is it.

“Do I want to number one wherever I play next season? Yes, I think with my age and the performances I had I want to play. To be on the bench is not the nicest thing.”
