Chelsea willing to pay world record £41million fee for goalkeeper
Chelsea could be set to pay a world record fee to sign Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland if Thibaut Courtois leaves the club, say reports in the Daily Express today.
There is uncertainty regarding Courtois’ contract which expires in June 2019. The Belgian has so far been unwilling to sign a new deal and has been the subject of interest from Real Madrid.
The Blues are identifying goalkeeping targets should they need to sign a replacement, and England international Butland is one of the standout names.
However, it would take a world record fee to sign him according to the Express. Stoke City would want a fee in the region of around £41million for the stopper, eclipsing the £35million Manchester City paid for Ederson last summer.
Butland famously turned down Chelsea before joining the Potters back in 2013 as he didn’t want to play second fiddle to Petr Cech, but this time if he were to join it would be as first choice.
Manager Antonio Conte will be hoping that a resolution can be found and that Thibaut Courtois does eventually renew, but Real Madrid could step up their interest if they cannot bring Manchester United’s David de Gea to the club.
