Alfie Mawson reveals how the England manager influenced him to join Fulham. The English international left Swansea City after the Wales side got relegated to the Championship last season.

The former England U-21 international appeared in a Fulham shirt for the first time when he marshalled the backline alongside Callum Chambers in a 2-0 win over Exeter City in the EFL Cup.

Despite Swansea’s demotion to the second tier, the 24 year old impressed in the heart of the Swans backline and his excellent display earned him a call up to the Three Lions side although he is yet to feature for his national side.

With Gareth Southgate scheduled to announce his squad for the UEFA Nations League on Thursday, Mawson has a pretty good chance to make the cut. The Fulham defender opened up on his recent transfer as he disclosed he consulted the England gaffer before making his decision.

“The last time I spoke to him I was at Swansea in the thick of things in the relegation battle and he said realistically if you want to get back into it obviously the Premier League is a must.

“My first and foremost thing is to get into this side and I’m sure if I do well and I play well then Gareth will make a decision. I respect whatever decision he makes but I’ve had a taste for it and I would like to get the full thing.”
