Gunners tried to sign Gonzalo Higuain

It has been confirmed that Arsenal tried to sign Gonzalo Higuain this summer, but their offer was considered too low.

This is coming from Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis, who eventually sold the player to Juventus for £80million.

Higuain was one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers in the summer having scored 38 goals in 42 appearances for Napoli in all competitions last term.

And Napoli chief De Laurentiis has confirmed the Gunners were interested, along with La Liga side Atletico Madrid, but neither club made a realistic offer for the Argentine.

“We received a request from Arsenal,” De Laurentiis told the London Evening Standard.

“Personally I also received a request from Atletico Madrid but they didn’t put enough money on the table.”

And De Laurentiis has also revealed he was not keen on selling Higuain this summer and tried to get him to sign a new deal before Juve swooped.

We were not ready to sell him – for me Higuain was not for sale,” he added.

“One year earlier I offered another five-year contract to Higuain and his brother [agent].

“It was more money than what he is getting right now from Juventus.”
