Arsenal have failed in their attempts to sign William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon in the closing stages of the transfer window.
The Portugese powerhouse has been linked with Arsenal and rivals Manchester United throughout the summer, but it appeared as if any deal was dead entering the last day of the transfer window.
However, it is understood that Arsenal launched a bid beginning with ‘2’ in the last few hours, but for only the bid to be rejected as Sporting’s valuation of the player was not met.
Sporting are wanting around £37 million for Carvalho and the midfielder will not stay in Portugal until January at least.
However, all may not be lost for Arsenal on transfer deadline day, with Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck said to be completing a medical ahead of a season-long loan.
