One of the January transfer window’s longest running sagas has taken another turn.
Although the suggestion that Draxler could leave Shalke 04 has been deemed “wild speculation” by the German club, as explained by Damian Buxton, it seems Arsenal are desperate to get their man.
Reports have emerged today that The North Londoners latest offer is £20 million plus German international Podolski, but the Bundesliga side are holding out to secure the full £37 million release clause written into the 20 year-old’s contract.
Manager Arsene Wenger is keen to negotiate a deal and has no qualms about using Podolski, who only joined in the summer of 2012, as a make-weight. The 28-year-old fan favourite is not considered a first choice through the middle as a main striker or even as a wide man and has been deemed surplus to requirements.
Draxler is one of Europe’s most sought after talents and would give the Premier League leaders a timely boost ahead of a difficult run of fixtures, despite concerns about an overload of attacking midfielders within their squad. In the Bundesliga, he has completed 72 take-ons so far this season.
