Gunners eyeing Watkins: A boyhood Arsenal fan and potential goal-scoring solution for Arteta

Despite a £200 million summer purchasing spree, Arsenal will be looking to add players to its roster for a successful second half of the Premier League season. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is aware of the club’s need for more talent, particularly in the central attacking position. Notably, football analyst Roy Keane highlighted the need of a steady center-forward in securing goals for a possible Premier League title.

According to Fichajes, a Spanish news outlet, Arsenal is interested in signing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins during the upcoming January transfer window. Watkins, a lifetime Arsenal supporter, has spoken about his desire to play for the club, adding an intriguing aspect to the potential trade.

“That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day,” Watkins told Sports Gazette at the 2020 London Football Awards. “But, you know, it’s a long shot.

“I’m an Arsenal fan so Thierry Henry was my [idol] he’s unbelievable to watch. He was the idol growing up really.”

While Watkins recently signed a five-year deal with Aston Villa, Arsenal have put forward a sizable offer to get the 27-year-old to move to the Emirates Stadium. The Englishman’s outstanding form in the 2023/24 season, with seven goals and four assists in only 13 games across all competitions, further piqued Arsenal’s interest even more.

Given Watkins’ love for Arsenal and proven goal-scoring talent, this January transfer deal might come to fruition, presenting a bright prospect for Arsenal’s hopes to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
