According to reports, Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, has begged the club to let him leave this Summer in order to join rivals Manchester United.

The Belgium centre-back, who is still the skipper at the Emirates Stadium, fell down the pecking order at the end of the 2012/2013 season after Arsene Wenger dropped him for Per Mertesacker after a shocking display against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby.

Since that 2-1 loss to Spurs at White Hart Lane, Mertesacker has been the concrete partner for Laurent Koscielny, and the two have become one of the best Premier League pairings at the back, which has left Vermaelen sitting on the bench.

Despite last Summer claiming he was ready to stay and fight for his place, another season with limited game-time has clearly lead Vermaelen to changing his mind about his future, and after hearing there is interest from United, the 28-year-old is now ready to leave The Gunners in a potential ÂŁ12million deal.

It is clear Wenger is not ready to sell the Belgium until he has signed a suitable replacement, but according to reports today, the defender has begged with the Frenchman to let him leave.
