Arsenal won both the FA Cup and FA Community Shield in 2017, and there was more reason to celebrate for the Gunners on Monday as one of their players won one of the top awards at the FIFA The Best Awards Gala.

Olivier Giroud was honoured with the prestigious Puskas Award for his stunning scorpion kick goal against Crystal Palace earlier in the year. The Frenchman took 36.17% of the vote, beating off competition from South Africa’s Oscarine Masuluke and Deyna Castellanos of Colombia.

Giroud attended the ceremony in London, and could not hide his delight at winning the award.

“It’s an honour for me,” said the Frenchman when up on stage at The Palladium.

“I’m delighted to receive this trophy today in front of legends of football. Now I’d just like to thank the people who voted for me. I would like to congratulate the 10 nominees who scored amazing goals too.”

“Obviously I would like to thank my team-mates, without them I couldn’t score maybe this goal, and my family.”

It wasn’t the only spectacular goal that Giroud has scored this year, just last week he scored the winner for Arsenal against Red Star Belgrade with an overhead kick attempt.

So far this season he has had to play second fiddle to new signing Alexandre Lacazette for the Gunners, but he is still the main man for France and will most likely start for them at the World Cup next summer.
