Arsenal to open Van Dijk talks

Arsenal are set to open talks with Celtic over the signing of Virgil Van Dijk. Arsene Wenger believes the 23-year old can make it in the Premier League and they have made him one of their top priorities in January.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila isn’t too keen on losing the defender but if a big money offer from the Gunners came in, he couldn’t turn it down because of the club’s current financial situation. With Wenger prepared to do whatever it takes to sign Van Dijk, it therefore appears a move could soon be done.

Arsenal have been on the hunt for a defender since selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona. Plus Per Mertesacker is currently struggling for form, while Laurent Koscielny is suffering from an injury. It means that Arsene Wenger is desperate to sign some defenders in the winter transfer window.

They had initially targeted Winston Reid but they would have to wait until the end of the season to sign him (albeit potentially on a free) and they also see Van Dijk as a better long-term option. Van Dijk has been a wanted man over the course of the past few seasons but it appears that Arsenal could finally be the ones to capture his signature.
