Arsenal are working hard on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back, and long-term Manchester United target, Mats Hummels.

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for more defenders once the January transfer window opens, and Arsene Wenger has stated his desire to land the Dortmund captain, who earlier in the year snubbed a move to Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old has quickly become one of the best defenders in world football, and his form for both club and country has won many plaudits, especially from England.

However, after snubbing a move to United, it appears that Hummels is keen to stay in Germany for the rest of his career, but according to reports, Arsenal are working hard behind the scenes on a potential deal for the German.

Hummels would join; Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski, Mesut Ozil and Serge Gnabry as Germans at the Emirates Stadium, with reports that Sami Khedira could also be joining.

Due to defensive injuries, Arsenal have been left with just a handful of fit defenders, leaving Wenger very short-staffed at the back, and it’s believed that he is ready to spend more cash in the New Year in order to strengthen his back-line.
