Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed his side for beating title-rivals Liverpool last night thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey.

The Gunners had come under question after losing two big games against Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, but they bounced back to show their title credentials by easing past Brendan Rodgers’ men.

They took the lead in the first-half after Cazorla pounced on his own header, which came back off the post, and smashed the ball past Simon Mignolet, much to the delight of the home fans.

It was then all wrapped up in the second period when Welshman, Aaron Ramsey, thumped home a 20-yard shot in superb style.

After the game, Wenger praised his side’s effort and he believes they proved their doubters wrong when it comes to the big matches.

“It was important to respond to convince people that we can win these big games,” said the Gunners manager.

“To win it in a convincing way is even more important.”

“Our defensive performance was outstanding.”

“We kept Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and then Philippe Coutinho quiet – and for that our defenders deserve a lot of credit.”

“It was vital to win because had we not won people would say ‘Arsenal cannot win the big games at home’. It is done in a convincing way and with good solidarity and focus.

“We have plenty of big games coming up and we have the ability to deal well with them.”
