Manager confirms he had no idea surgery was essential

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at fans accusing him of lying about Danny Welbeck’s fitness.

The Frenchman continued to insist that the striker would be back after the international break, but it was then reported just days after the transfer window shut that he would be out ‘for months’.

Welbeck underwent knee surgery after struggling with his rehab and will now be out until the New Year.

After the club broke the news, fingers were pointed at Wenger and he was accused of lying to the fans about Welbeck’s return date.

However, he has hit back at those claims in today’s press conference.

“Whether we have players injured or not doesn’t change the problem, that’s what I don’t understand from the media,” he said.

“First of all I am surprised that people accused me of lying when I was in the press conference on Friday morning, I did not know Welbeck had a bad set back.

“I did not lie to you, I gave you the information I had. I heard late on Friday night that his condition had not evolved as well as we thought it was and he had needed specialist and needed further investigation.

“Apart from that, if we did not find someone [to sign], we did not find them.”
