Arsene Wenger ready for ‘season defining’ clash

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes tonight’s clash with Napoli in the Champions League will go on to define the rest of their season.

The Gunners go to Italy knowing that they just have to avoid a 3-goal defeat to ensure qualification to the knockout-stages, something they were not predicted after being drawn alongside Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Marseille.

Despite just needing to avoid the heavy defeat, Wenger has promised that he will not park the bus and he will play his usual attacking football as he wants to build up momentum for giant clashes in the Premier League against Manchester City and Chelsea.

“This game certainly [will define our season],” he said. “It is to be in the Champions League or not. The other two games, not definitely because we are five points ahead.

“The championship is a marathon and we will be in the race no matter what happens, but it will show our strengths hopefully. Tomorrow [against Napoli] is a decider, that is for sure.

“We want to win and it is the only way we can approach the game. We have our usual game, we try to take control of the ball, try to play our game. Benitez has a lot of experience and is a very intelligent manager, I know he will prepare his team well. The only way to counter that is to be at our best and put in a good performance. An average performance will not be good enough. Our priorities are simple, first qualify, if possible top.”
