Arsene Wenger has revealed exactly why he signed Colombia keeper David Ospina from Nice, speaking to Arsenal’s official website after his side were defeated at the hands of New York Red Bulls. After losing their second pre-season friendly this summer, Wenger expressed his displeasurement with the result but told the press he was happy with his side’s run-out.

He was then asked about recent signing David Ospina from Nice, and Wenger took the oppurtunity to impart the reasoning behind the deal.

He said: ‘I’ve known him for a long time because he played for Nice and he went there a few years ago and slowly became a very important player for them.

‘Hugo Lloris played for Nice before he moved to Lyon and after he moved they played Ospina. He had a big impact straight away and Lloris was not an easy player to replace.

‘I felt that he did very well at the World Cup.’

Opsina will arrive at The Emirates next week and Wojciech Szczesny will be surely concerned about his number one keeper spot after conceding a sloppy goal in the last friendly match defeat to New York Red Bulls. The Pole himself has admitted his lack of conentration in games when he doesn’t have much to do but there will be no room for that sort of complacency anymore, with Ospina arriving with the intention to be first-choice keeper next season.
