Atletico Madrid have officially stated that an agreement has been reached with AS Monaco to send Gelson Martins out on loan for the remainder of the season.
The 23-year-old winger signed with Los Rojiblancos last summer after terminating his contract with Sporting Lisbon. Since then he has made, 12 appearances under Diego Simeone with just one goal registered to his name.
Martins has struggled to establish himself at the Wandametropolitana and has been subjected to interests from Premier League sides, Arsenal and Newcastle United as well. However, it is a former Gunner, Thierry Henry who led the way in negotiating the Portuguese’s move to Monaco.
Atletico are close to finalising a deal for Alvaro Morata from Chelsea as the Spaniard completes his medical and all the final procedures at Madrid. This has paved the way for Martins to move out to the French top-flight and prove his worth to Simeone.
Players like Angel Correa, Vitolo, Thomas Lemark and Koke are ahead of the 23-year-old in the Atletico pecking order. However, Martins is still very young and has plenty of time to adjust to the La Liga outfit.
For the time being, he will be heading to Stade Louis II to help the team fight off relegation this term.
