Brendan Rodgers is thought to be a contender for the England job

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is thought to be a ‘home-grown’ managerial candidate for England, should they fail at next year’s European Championships.

The 42-year-old Irishman was sacked by Liverpool, following their 1-1 draw with local rivals Everton on Sunday, and is now understood to be one of a number of candidates who could succeed Roy Hodgson as England boss.

Rodgers is in no rush to return to management in the coming weeks or months, it is believed, which could mean he could be intention to manage the Three Lions following next year’s Euros in France.

Another ex-Liverpool boss for England?

Should England fail to reach the quarter-finals, it is thought that Hodgson’s contract will not be renewed by the FA, therefore making Rodgers one of the home-grown candidates in contention, along with other English candidates.

England host Estonia on Friday night at Wembley, in a fixture that is nothing more than a friendly fixture in reality, with the Three Lions having already qualified for next summer’s continental tournament.

Hodgson moved on to West Bromwich Albion after being sacked by Liverpool, while Rodgers could walk straight into the Wembley dugout, should he not take on a job at club level.
