According to reports, Barcelona lead Liverpool in the race to sign Ajax teenager Matthijs de Ligt. De Ligt is currently one of most talented and promising young defenders in Europe and has done very well for Ajax lately.
This season, de Ligt has made 21 appearances for Ajax across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He has also been a regular for Netherlands and has forged a good partnership with Virgil van Dijk in central defence. De Ligt played a key role in Netherlands’ Nations League wins against Germany and France.
Barcelona have shown interest in De Ligt for a long time and consider him as a long-term replacement for Gerard Pique. Given the injury issues Barcelona have in their defence at present, the addition of de Ligt is just what they need.
Liverpool have also shown interest in signing de Ligt but it seems that Barcelona are currently the frontrunner to rope in the Dutchman.
