The 25-year-old was one of Liverpool’s primary targets last summer but the Reds lost out to Dortmund, who snapped up his services for a fee of £24.4m.

While Liverpool have flourished despite failing to land the former Shakhtar Donetsk man, Mkhitaryan says he could one day end up at Anfield – although he insists he is perfectly happy at Dortmund.

He told Sport-Express.ru: “Of course I know how much Liverpool wanted me, but what happened, happened. I’m now in Dortmund and very happy and proud about it.

“Can I see myself at Liverpool in the future? You know that it doesn’t depend entirely on me. But this is life and everything is possible.

“Would I want to play in England at some point? Bundesliga is not a worse league than the Premier League. That’s for sure.”

Mkhitaryan, who is under contract until 2017, scored a record-breaking tally of 25 goals in the Ukrainian league in his final season at Shakhtar, while he has already scored nine goals in all competitions for Dortmund this term.
