Chelsea to pay Arsenal £5m for Cesc Fabregas deal

Chelsea will have to pay Arsenal £5million if they want to complete the signing of FC Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

With reports suggesting that a £30m deal is almost complete between the two sides, after Arsenal refused to activate their buy-back clause, there are now legalities to sort out between Chelsea and Arsenal due to clauses in the Spaniard’s contract.

When Arsenal agreed to sell Fabregas back to his boyhood club, they inserted two clauses into his new contract in Spain. One of them was the buy-back clause, and the other was a sell-on fee, which basically meant, if Barca were to sell the midfielder at any time, the club buying him, would have to pay some money to The Gunners.

Despite the clause in the contract suggesting Arsenal would get a large fee of the transfer, reports believe that Chelsea will only have to pay £5m to their London rivals before completing the deal for the 27-year-old.

According to reports in Spain, a formal announcement of the transfer could be as little as a few days away.
