CONFIRMED: Chelsea Football Club project delayed!

Chelsea are now planning to stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2019-20 season

This is because of delays to the start of structural work to their new stadium.

The Blues are confident of being able to return in three years and open their new 60,000 seater stadium in the summer of 2023.

But, there is still a possibility, given the massive scale of the project, that the building work may take four years rather than the three planned.

It is a highly intricate project, even more than the new stadium being constructed over at White Hart Lane. The club had considered doing what Tottenham Hotspur were doing by beginning some building work while remaining in situ, however, that has been dismissed as impractical and not very cost effective.

The Blues now must work closely with Network Rail and Transport for London over plans to build a decking over  the railway lines that serve the stadium. The proximity of the redevelopment to Brompton Cemetery which has Grade 1 listed status is another problem.

Chelsea Football Club are yet to agree to buy the freehold of Stamford Bridge from the Chelsea Pitch Owners or yet to extend the lease beyond the 112 years that still remain. they also are set reach agreement with former chairman Ken Bates to buy his penthouse suite in the Chelsea Village hotel before the demolition can begin.

Wembley is the the Blue’s preferred temporary home ground while the planned redevelopment takes place, however, they have also spoken to West Ham United about a potential ground share at the London Stadium.
