Conte tells Ferguson not to write off Chelsea’s title chances

The Italian has made a good start to life at Stamford Bridge

Antonio Conte has told former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to not rule out Chelsea’s title chances this season.

Ferguson had revealed earlier this week that he believed his former club Manchester United, alongside Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool could all compete for the Premier League this season.

However, he didn’t name the Blues in his predictions, despite the club being in fifth, four points off top spot with a game in hand – prior to their fixture against Southampton on Sunday.

After winning their first three league games of the season, they failed to win in the league in September, with defeats to both Liverpool and Arsenal.

But Conte’s men have returned to form in recent weeks with a comfortable 3-0 win over current Premier League champions Leicester City, and a 4-0 thrashing of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, upon his first return to Stamford Bridge after being sacked last December.

“I respect a lot what he said, but I know that we are working very well,” said Conte.

“I think now we are now in a good way to improve a lot and to become a team that can stay (in contention) until the end to get something.

“Our ambition must be always to play to win every game. Always. It’s important. I try to transfer this to my players in every moment, in every day, every week, in every game.

“We must be ambitious. But to be ambitious you must work a lot.”
