The Dutch midfielder was linked with a switch to Old Trafford this summer but with Louis van Gaal occupied trying to sign Vidal, a deal never materialised.

De Jong joined Milan following a title winning season with Manchester City and has since gone on to help van Gaal reach the semi-finals of the World Cup with the Netherlands.

The 29 year-old was also rumoured to be moving back to former club Ajax, but he dismissed these claims after saying he wants to continue playing at the highest level.

Reports from Italy have suggested that a move for de Jong could have happened either in January or at the end of the season. but it now seems he is keen to stay put under new manager Filippo Inzaghi.

Reports claim that the Dutchman wants to extend his contract at the San Siro and his representatives have already begun the talks with the club over a new deal.

The news will come as a blow to van Gaal, who is still on the search for a holding midfielder and was hoping to secure the move that would see him reunited with the player.

United will now likely turn their attentions to Roma man, Kevin Strootman, who also represented the Netherlands at this year’s World Cup.
