Ahead of tonight’s game against Fulham, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has stated his belief that Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has “a lot to offer” the national team from a holding midfield role.

The 33-year old CM powerhouse is usually dispatched in an offensive midfield role but has excelled in a holding role with Liverpool this season, leading Rodgers to believe that that is where England head coach Roy Hodgson should play him in this summers world Cup in Rio.

“Everyone knows Stevie’s qualities” said Rodgers “so to flip that and become a playmaker in the other half of the field shows the tactical intelligence and how he has a lot to offer”

Hodgson is expected to declare his provisional 30-man squad in May with many other Liverpool names circulating around the rumour mill.

Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson have been consistently brilliant this year. Henderson has begun to justify his hefty price tag, and Sturridge has been the man to watch in front of goal, but also youngsters such as Jon Flanagan and Raheem Sterling have impressed on occasion including the 5-1 win at home to Arsenal last weekend.
