Andre Onana had a disastrous start to his Manchester United career.

The Red Devils allowed long-term goalkeeper David de Gea to depart as a free agent and replaced him with Cameroonian keeper Andre Onana in the summer.

But since his arrival, Onana had a rocky start to his United career as he conceded 18 goals in 10 games in all competitions.

He made calamitous errors against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the group games of the Champions League.

Manager Erik ten Hag believes that the former Inter Milan man is going through a tough phase like former keepers before him including Peter Schmeichel and David de Gea.

Club legend Rio Ferdinand believes that senior defenders are expected to help Onana from the back.

Ferdinand said: “Those moments are about the experienced players making the new ones more confident.

“When they make a good save it’s about reassuring them, when they make a mistake it’s about not berating them. There will be times when you have to berate someone like that but when you know someone was young and fragile, like David was, you’ve got to be clever around those situations.

“He wanted to feel his team-mates had confidence. If your team-mates have confidence in you, f*** what anyone else has said. That’s what the experienced players at Man United have to do now, rally around.”
