Mark Ogden says Roberto De Zerbi tops Michael Edwards’ Liverpool wish list

ESPN journalist Mark Ogden has released an unexpected revelation in the current drama around Liverpool’s hunt for a new manager. Against common opinion, Xabi Alonso is not at the top of Michael Edwards’ wishlist.

Ogden said on ESPN FC: “Xabi Alonso is not going to go to Liverpool. Liverpool have pulled out. The word they’re getting from Leverkusen is that Alonso wants to stay for at Leverkusen for at least one more year. So, Liverpool are having to look elsewhere.

“There’s been a few little inklings this week that Alonso wasn’t totally keen on being the guy after Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

“But, prior to that, Michael Edwards has gone back now as the CEO of FSG and he has ideas different to what people may be thinking of Xabi Alonso.

“Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton is the guy at the top of his list.”

However, Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Hove Albion has caught the interest of Liverpool’s hierarchy.

With Jurgen Klopp’s departure looming, the Reds desperately need a seasoned coach to lead them through the difficult roads ahead. Edwards, backed by FSG, has returned to Liverpool with a clear vision, and De Zerbi appears to be the right fit.

De Zerbi, who has been compared to Real Madrid’s style of play by none other than Gary Neville, has drawn praise with his tactical expertise and capacity to get the most out of his players in Brighton.

However, Liverpool’s opportunities are not restricted to De Zerbi. Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon, Simone Inzaghi of Inter Milan, and Franck Haise of RC Lens have all came out as potential candidates for the coveted Anfield hot seat.

As excitement grows and fans anxiously await the announcement, it remains to be seen who will take on the enormous task of filling Klopp’s shoes and leading Liverpool into a new era of football success.
