Antonio Conte cannot promise Cesc Fabregas will remain at Chelsea.
Fabregas, who celebrated his 30th birthday this week, has been linked with a move away from the club throughout the season due to playing a smaller role for the Blues than last season.
He has mainly started the games on the bench, but still made a huge impact every time he has got to the pitch – he has scored a solid six goals this term assisting a thunderous 12 goals in addition.
Reports have suggested the Spaniard has been offered a new two-year extension worth £150,000-a-week, as the club would like to retain him in the team ahead of Chelsea’s return to the Champions League next season.
Antonio Conte was asked about Fabregas’ situation and stressed that there is no way he can force Fabregas to stay, understanding that a player like Fabregas may base his decision on the amount of minutes on the pitch he is promised.
“I think he [Cesc Fabregas] is playing very well this season. His level is very high, great commitment, work rate and behaviours for the whole season.
He is a top player and if he starts the game or comes in during the game I think he is always decisive for us.
I like to underline the concept, I musn’t keep happy a player, we must win.
You can be happy and play every game, but if you can’t be happy fighting for a title and a cup. I don’t think this type of question.
To work very hard it is not simple. I think that my target is to put in the mind is a winning mentality, it doesn’t exist to keep the players happy.
I don’t want this, I want players who are ready to fight and put themselves in the team to win together.”
