Manchester United star Henrikh Mkhitaryan has hit back at critics who believe he moved to the club for money.

The Armenian, 28, moved to Old Trafford in the summer from German side Borussia Dortmund in a £28m deal.

Some people have hit out at the move, claiming he took an easy pay rise, motivated by money. Reports in Germany suggested he was to treble his salary and bank a substantial signing-on bonus.

Initially, Mkhitaryan struggled to make a real impression in Manchester. Recently however, he has started to find his form, and found the net in Sunday’s convincing 3-0 win over champions Leicester City.

But Mkhitaryan has dismissed those suggestions, insisting he moved purely to prove himself.

He told German newspaper Bild: “I can not understand that, and that’s wrong.

“If it were just about money, I would have transferred from Shakhtar Donetsk to Anzhi Makhachkala and not to Borussia Dortmund. But I did not want that. I wanted to develop further.”

One man who was critical of Mkhitaryan’s move was Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, who described the move as ‘odd’. Watzke also hit out at Mkhitaryan for not taking a penalty for Dortmund last season against Bayern Munich in the German Cup Final, which Dortmund lost.

Mkhitaryan responded: “If he wants to assess me on the basis of one game, that’s wrong. He’s probably forgotten what I did the whole season before.

“I would have scored a penalty in Berlin. But there’s a coach and 11 players on the pitch and we discussed who would take one.”
