Monaco respond to Jose Mourinho speculation

AS Monaco have issued a statement regarding rumours that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was set to be their next manager if he is shown the door by the Premier League champions.

It has been a turbulent campaign for both the Blues and Jose, with poor league form coupled with off-field problems.

If Mourinho is axed by owner Roman Abramovich, then there would surely be a host of clubs immediately linked with the Special One, despite his stock seemingly falling this season.

One of those clubs was French club Monaco, and rumours were rife that they were in talks over a ÂŁ35m deal. The news broke via Italian businessman Alessandro Proto.

But Proto has apparently changed what he previously claimed, today stating that it would cost closer to £71m for the Portuguese manager.

“We offered €50 million to have the coach immediately, but the request was €100m and that figure seems exaggerated,” Proto Enterprises said in a statement to EFE.

Monaco, however, have dismissed the claims, tweeting: “AS Monaco would invite the media to not repeat extravagant and unsubstantiated rumors from a supposedly minority shareholder.”

The French side are currently coached by another Portuguese, Leonardo Jardim, who replaced Claudio Ranieri last year.
