Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has hailed goalkeeper Angus Gunn’s spirited performance following Southampton’s goalless draw against Chelsea at St Mary’s.

Hasenhuttl rang in a number of changes and gave Gunn a chance to shine on his debut. The 22 year old looked pretty confident and made a number of smart saves to keep his side in the game.

With both Manchester United and Arsenal winning their respective games pressure is mounting on Chelsea as their chances of staying in the title race seem to be fading away.

Chelsea were ineffective in the opponent attacking third while Saints were happy to defend and soak up the pressure. This stalemate could dent a huge blow to Chelsea’s top four hopes.

Hasenhuttl said, “The main thing is the first clean sheet since I came here, that is maybe also because Gunn was in goal for the first time and he did a fantastic job.

“He was as brave as we wanted him to be because he was defending forward and we spoke about the chipped balls behind the last row and it was important that he was always on line and trying to be defending forward.

“I am very happy with him. It was important for me to see what we had in the goalkeeper position and that was an amazing step for him.”
