Pochettino believes stadium move hindered trophy chances

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that the club’s stadium move has temporarily hindered the team’s chances of winning a silverware.

The Argentine is yet to win a trophy with Spurs, and another opportunity went up in the smoke as his side crashed out of the Carabao Cup semi-finals to London rivals Chelsea in a penalty shoot-out.

Pochettino says he understands the frustrations of the fans but believes that his team would have won a trophy had they not moved away from White Hart Lane.

Speaking to the media ahead of Spurs’ FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace, the manager said: “We are always close to the last step [to trophies] but to achieve it is the most difficult thing.

“At the moment, the team needed the last push, what happened? We build and build but then, White Hart Lane – gone.

“We moved to Wembley and there were all the doubts about how we are going to behave. There was the example of West Ham in their first season [at the London Stadium], and many things in this process that stopped the evolution of the team about to win.

“Remember, we were unbeaten in the Premier League at White Hart Lane in our last season there.”

Pochettino also believes that Spurs have no history of winning but they are moving in the right direction.

He said: “Sometimes we forget where we came from four and a half years ago. That is the first mistake people make.

“Tottenham will be in the same level as Manchester United, Manchester City, this type of club, Chelsea. In the future, I hope, yes. But we sometimes forget from where we came.

“Four and a half years ago, when we arrived here the people begged to be competitive. Begged to have the possibility, in five years, once to be in the Champions League, to attract good players.”

Spurs visit Selhurst Park for their FA Cup fourth round tie before welcoming Watford at Wembley for their next league game.
