PSG manager Tuchel blasts referee over VAR controversy

PSG bagged all three points with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Rennes in the Ligue 1 but manager Thomas Tuchel was not at all impressed with the referee during the game.

Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe scored in the second half after Edinson Cavani’s opener in the first half was cancelled out by M’Baye Niang and the Uruguayan completed a brace late in the game to cap off a dominant display from the Ligue 1 leaders.

However, M’Baye Niang’s horrible challenge on defender Thilo Kehrer sparked massive controversy, with the referee sparing the player by showing just a yellow card even after the video footage confirmed that the tackle was well worthy of a red card.

And Tuchel slammed the match officials for their poor interpretation of the VAR, claiming that the technology is useless if the referees continue to make ridiculous decisions like that.

“Why do we have VAR? Why do we have VAR? Why?” he shouted. “If it’s a penalty, if it’s not a penalty. If it’s a red card, not a red card. There’s no point looking at VAR anymore, it’s ridiculous.”

Striker Edinson Cavani was seen to back his manager, and complained: “Hey ref. What are you going to whistle for? With television (images) and you (make decisions) like that? That’s not possible.”

PSG stretched their lead to 13 points at the top of the table with two games in hand.
