What can the manager of a club ask when his owner has gifted him with two of the world’s most expensive players in the history of the game in back to back transfer windows.
Well for Thomas Tuchel, the list still has a few more boxes to cross. When the PSG boss was asked about his potential transfer targets during the winter market, Tuchel had ready answers. “It’s simple – I would like to have a second Verratti and a second Marquinhos and I would be very happy. They have top quality, top personality, they are top players. Top, top, top! They are hard to find. I am the coach – it is very difficult for me to be satisfied with our level. In my opinion, one must always improve: my translator, you [the media], me… I’m demanding.”
Top does seem to be the way for PSG; they sit top of the table in France with a healthy double digit lead and unlikely to be caught up. In the UCL group stages they beat Liverpool and Napoli to top the table and now will face a weakened Manchester United squad in the Round of 16, a tie they are expected to win without much ado.
PSG does seem to be working towards building a super club but bringing in players worth hundreds of millions of dollars by absolutely toying with the FFP does put the competitive nature of the game at risk; what can football do against such heavy money?
