The summer recruit is hoping to help Jurgen Klopp’s side to strengthen the one area of their game that could cost them valuable points

Liverpool defender Joel Matip admits when the Reds have conceded goals this season, he has been left to rue it for days.

The former Schalke centre-back has become a part of a defence that has conceded 10 goals in seven league games – the most of the top eight teams in the league. But he is determined to rectify the one problem that is currently causing Reds boss Jurgen Klopp some concern.

Set pieces have been a problem for Liverpool this season, having conceded three times on the opening day of the season against Arsenal, with only their goalscoring prowess enough to save them and take all three points.

But rather than forget about the goals conceded and move on, Matip is passionate about getting things right at the back and solidifying their defence so the club can try to put together a serious title challenge this campaign.

“(The defence) is a point we have to work on. The most important thing, for me, is always to win.” said Matip.

“The next most important thing is the clean sheet. 3-2 is not my favourite result.

“The team is working hard to improve defending. The manager wants clean sheets. We know there are a lot of games you have to win 1-0.

“I get very angry when we concede. If we win it’s good, but I always have the goal we conceded in my head. I think about it for days afterwards.”

Liverpool’s form in front of goal has been prolific to date, but Matip is keen for that not to be derailed by errors at the back. And having arrived at Anfield in the summer, he’s keen to impress Reds fans in his debut campaign.

“We have to defend against this and we have lots of practices,” Matip added.

“This week we practised against crosses and high balls.

“If the ball comes in my area I have to give everything to try and clear it.”
