Everton have entered the race to sign Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, reports the Independent.

According to the broadsheet Newspaper, the Toffees are to match Aston Villa’s ÂŁ8 million bid for Cleverley, who seems surplus to requirements at Manchester United.

Aston Villa had previously been expected to complete the deal for the 24 year old, however Everton are set to make a bid.

Cleverley is now apparently believed to prefer a deal to join Everton, with a reunion with Roberto Martinez on the cards, with Martinez managing Cleverley whilst the midfielder was on loan at Wigan Athletic during the 2010/11 season, where Cleverley impressed at the DW Stadium.

Martinez took Cleverley to Wigan in the summer of 2010, with the midfielder making 25 appearances for the Latics, with Everton the most likely destination.

Paul Lambert, manager of Aston Villa looked set to land the Basingstoke born player, however his wages seemed to be a stumbling block.
