Lescott has been the subject of interest from West Ham United during the transfer window, but with the east London club’s loan quota of four now full, it has opened the door for Everton to make a late swoop.

The Toffees already have City midfielder Gareth Barry on loan and SportsDirect News understands boss Roberto Martinez is now looking at Lescott to strengthen his defence.

The midweek defeat to rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby and the imminent departure of Johnny Heitinga to Galatasaray has forced Martinez step up his interest in Lescott.

Martinez has just Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distain and Antolin Alcaraz to call on in the centre of defence and wants to ensure that he has a squad that is capable of finishing in the Champions League places.

With Gerard Deulofeu, Romelu Lukaku and Barry on loan already, Martinez has one space left to fill to meet the loan quota.

Lescott moved to City for £22 million in 2009 and won the Premier League title in 2012, but this season he has found himself reduced to a bit part role and with the World Cup approaching he will want to ensure he is playing regularly.
