FIFA World Cup Trophy History, Design & Worth

Well the current FIFA World Cup Trophy has only been around for the past 40 years or so. The trophy appeared in the 1974 World Cup and  used from 1974 to 2018. However, winning teams only get to keep a replica trophy. But previously, before 1974, winners got to keep the World Cup trophy (the Jules Rimet trophy) if they win the World Cup three times. Brazil achieved this feat in 1970 and got to keep the old World Cup trophy after their third win. However, someone stole the trophy which explains why FIFA backed out of that promise for the current World Cup.

So did Germany get to keep the World Cup when they won for the third time in 2014?

No, since FIFA backed out of that promise, all winning nations only get a replica trophy to keep.

What is the World Cup trophy made out of?

The trophy is made from 18-carat gold and the base is made from malachite.

Who Designed the FIFA World Cup trophy?

Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga designed the current FIFA World Cup trophy. It stands at 36.8 centimetres (14.5 inches) tall and weighs 6.2 kilograms. The trophy has two figures holding the earth on it. FIFA engrave the names of each of the winning teams on the bottom of the trophy.

Is FIFA running out of room to engrave the names of the winners on the trophy?

There is only room for four more names to be engraved into the winners section on the trophy. This means that in 2030, FIFA will have to bring out a new trophy for the World Cup.

Jules Rimet Trophy (The Original trophy)

The very first World Cup trophy in 1930 was called “Victory” but FIFA renamed it in 1946 to ‘Jules Rimet’ trophy in honor of FIFA president Jules Rimet who helped establish the tournament  in 1929.

Designer Abel Lafleur made the trophy with gold plated sterling silver and used a white and yellow marble base. It was 35 centimeters tall and weighed 3.8kg. The trophy has a Greek goddess of victory on it. FIFA used the Jules Rimet trophy from 1930 to 1970.

Brazil got to keep this trophy in 1970 as they had won the World Cup three times- in accordance with old FIFA rules. But the trophy was later stolen and rumour has it that it was melted down and sold.

How much is the current FIFA World Cup trophy worth?
