Robbie Fowler backs Jose Mourinho as potential Jurgen Klopp successor at Liverpool
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has thrown a surprising curveball into the mix of potential successors for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
In an interview with Crypto Casino LTD, affectionately known as ‘God’ among Liverpool faithful, Fowler expressed his belief that former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho could be an ideal replacement for Klopp.
“I could understand why you would get someone like a Mourinho, a case in point would be Real Madrid, for example,” said Fowler.
“When Zinedine Zidane left for the second time in 2021, they didn’t go looking for a young and up-and-coming manager, they went for an experienced manager in Carlo Ancelotti.
“That experience and that know-how can definitely help a club in transition.”
However, Fowler admitted that Slot will receive the full backing of all involved with Liverpool if he can create a positive atmosphere at the club following Klopp’s exit.
“As long as the new manager coming in has the character to go and understand the club, the fans and the culture, then that can make it a little bit easier,” added the 49-year-old.
“I do think for this particular club, it doesn’t matter if the replacement is experienced or inexperienced, it’s more about the feel of the manager and the club. It’s about how someone like Arne Slot can adapt to that current situation and to the club, then we take it for what it is.
“As long as Arne Slot comes in and creates the right environment for the players to thrive, then he will get the backing of everyone.”
Fowler highlighted Mourinho’s wealth of experience, citing his successful tenure at Real Madrid as evidence of his managerial prowess.
While many Liverpool supporters were initially relieved when Mourinho was linked with the club for only a brief period, Fowler’s perspective adds an intriguing dimension to the discussion.
Despite endorsing Mourinho, Fowler also offered support for Feyenoord manager Arne Slot, who is set to take over from Klopp next season.
Fowler emphasized that Slot would have the full backing of everyone involved with Liverpool if he could foster a positive atmosphere at the club post-Klopp.
The news comes amidst Liverpool’s extensive search for Klopp’s successor, which saw Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim as previous front-runners, both eventually unavailable for the role.
As speculation continues to swirl, Fowler’s endorsement of Mourinho injects fresh speculation into Liverpool’s managerial future.
