Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen believes wantaway striker Dimitar Berbatov will remain at Craven Cottage until the end of the season at least due to the personal relationship he has with The Bulgarian.

The two used to work with each other during their Manchester United days and since Meulensteen has taken over as the manager at Fulham, it appears that Berbatov has started to put the effort into his performances once again, something which wasn’t there during Martin Jol’s tenure.

After the news broke that the veteran wanted to leave the London-based club, Meulensteen has revealed that he sat down and spoke with the striker and he now is confident that he can keep hold of the 32-year-old until the end of the season.

“I’ve had a chat with him and he has shown me he is very committed to the games we have ahead,” said Meulensteen. “We are going to review the situation next month, but I could well have persuaded him to stay.

“I have never really got to the bottom of why he became unsettled. He keeps his cards close to his chest.”
