Gareth Southgate has admitted the quality of the current crop of young England players are quite high and the gaffer is having a selection headache ahead of the Croatia match in the UEFA Nations League.

Southgate is believed to be a keen admirer of young talents and has a knack of picking youngsters for his side. The Three Lions gaffer wants the core setup of the current system to be led by the young players and has handed England caps to the likes of Ben Chilwell, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been a regular with the senior squad and the amount of confidence Southgate has shown in the player could be an encouraging sign for any young player in future.

Southgate said, “We’ve added depth to the squad with more young players emerging, and more competition for places.

“We’ve had a slight change of system, which has added something different. We’ve got some flexibility in how we can play.

“We’re always improving and we haven’t sat on our laurels. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to pick a team and that’s a really good sign. Young players have come through and done really well.

“The only way to avoid complacency and keep driving performances is to have that competition.”
