Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has thanked midfielder Steven Gerrard for convincing him to turn down Arsenal in the Summer and remain at Anfield.

The Uruguayan has had yet another frutiful season in Merseyside, becoming the league’s top goalscorer for the season, despite missing several games at the beginning of the campaign due to his ban for biting, but things could have been very different for both Liverpool and Suarez.

At the beginning of pre-season, the Liverpool striker spoke out to the press and admitted that he wanted to leave the club due to his reputation being damaged, and he repeated these thoughts on numerous occasions.

This then lead to both Real Madrid and Arsenal scrapping for his signature, but after two formal bids from The Gunners were turned down by Brendan Rodgers and co., the 27-year-old had no choice but to stay at Liverpool.

However, speaking in a recent interview, Suarez has admitted that it was Steven Gerrard that convinced him to stay at the club, and he is so thankful that the Englishman did.

‘He didn’t talk about me, or through me, in the press, but in person,’ Suarez said.

‘In those moments I forgot that he was “world football great Gerrard”, a Liverpool legend, but as a humble person who spoke to me with all his heart for hours.

‘He said I was the best forward he’d ever played with, which given the amazing strikers that he’s played with at Liverpool, was amazing for me to hear.

‘I’ll never forget that.’
