Liverpool defender Glen Johnson is expected to be offered a new contract at the club as his current deal is set to expire in June, but if he wants to stay at Anfield, he will have to take a pay-cut.

The English right-back is reportedly on £140k-a-week at the moment, but it is believed that Brendan Rodgers and the club’s board are not prepared to offer him that much this time around with his age being an important factor.

Johnson has been on that wage ever since joining from Portsmouth and Rodgers has revealed that the club will open talks when the time is right.

“It’s something the club will take up at the right time,” said Rodgers. “I’m not sure where it’s at.”

The Reds boss also spoke about the right-back’s return from injury and he has admitted that he cannot wait to have him fit again.

“Glen is the type of player you don’t realise what you’re missing until he’s not in the team,” added Rodgers.

“He was outstanding against Manchester United so it will be great when we get him back. He’s got the cast off his foot now and he’s working hard to be back in the next few weeks.”
