Smalling has fallen out of first-team picture at United.

Manchester United’s longest-serving player Chris Smalling is reportedly closing in on surprise switch to Serie A outfit AS Roma.

Manchester United currently have 29 players in their squad and need to get rid of some stars before the European window closes on 2 September.

Although the Red Devils, like any other English club, cannot buy players any more after the English window slammed shut earlier this month, they can still sell or loan out stars. Smalling has fallen down the pecking order at United under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since the off-season since the arrival of Harry Maguire.

According to the Guardian, the England international was informed that young defender Axel Tuanzebe would be the back-up option, leaving his chances of playing time limited. As a result, United have let Chris Smalling depart the club on loan to move to AS Roma, according to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Smalling is believed to have arrived at United’s headquarters on Thursday morning to settle the “final details of his departure”, and will later fly to Italy for a medical with Roma. The reports claims that the centre-back will join the Giallorossi on loan for a reported fee of €3 million on a dry loan, with no option to buy included in the deal.

The 29-year-old joined United for €10 million from Fulham in 2010 during the reign of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson and has made 323 appearances for the first-team.
