Javier Hernandez is a proposed transfer target for Spanish La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, according to The Guardian.

Hernandez himself is unsure where he will be playing his football next season, with Atletico set to offer an escape route to The Spanish capital.

The Mexican faces stiff competition in the forward line, with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney, Shinj Kagawa, Wilifried Zaha and Adnan Januzaj all vying for places.

Hernandez has been at United since 2010, after signing from Mexican Premier Liga side Guadalajara, and has made 101 appearances for the Red Devils, with 24 of them coming last season.

And when pushed regarding his future, he replied: The future, only god knows,” he said.

There is competition here and I will continue to work hard as I always do.”

Atletico have already signed Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann to bolster their forward line following the departures of Diego Costa to Chelsea and David Villa to New York City FC.

But Manager Diego Simeone has praised Hernandez, and is oping that he can tie up a deal for the forward.

“He’s a vertical player, he’s great in one-on-one situations and he’s someone who could be useful to any team,” the AtlĂ©tico manager told a press conference in Mexico, before his side’s pre-season fixture with Club AmĂ©rica.

“We are speaking to the sporting directors about the type of player we want and then it’s up to them to bring the player in. With Javier Hernández and lots of other great players, anything is possible. We can’t close any door until the transfer window shuts.”
