Carragher critiques Liverpool’s performance after FA Cup loss to Manchester United
Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend, did not mince words following Liverpool’s humbling FA Cup defeat to Manchester United. Despite an early lead and controlling play, the Reds lost 4-3 after extra time at Old Trafford.
Carragher singled out Liverpool’s attacking players for criticism, calling them “all very poor” during the game. However, he spared a special observation for one individual: a Liverpool player who he described as playing “like the game is in slow motion.”
Former Liverpool defender Carragher wrote on X: “Unbelievable game & it’s a great result for Man United but Liverpool only have themselves to blame.
Scored three & still the attacking players were all very poor. Can’t complain too much as they’ve been amazing all season. Football bloody hell!”
Cody Gakpo came on for Liverpool midway through the second period. The Dutchman made the wrong decision when the Reds created a five-vs-two opportunity on the counter-attack to take a two-goal advantage – and didn’t have much of an impact otherwise. Carragher said: “Gakpo plays like the game is in slow motion.”
With glimpses of promise, Liverpool were unable to retain their lead, giving up late in regular time and twice in extra time, resulting in a sad defeat. Harvey Elliott’s goal in extra time provided a ray of hope, but it was insufficient to secure win.
As the dust settled on Liverpool’s treble aspirations, Carragher’s evaluation hinted at conflicts within the Liverpool camp. With the dissatisfaction of the loss looming large, Liverpool faces a difficult task in regrouping for the remainder of the season.
