Putting an end to all speculation Jan Oblak has penned a long term contract with Atletico Madrid.
The 26 year old has extended his association until the summer of 2023. The custodian reportedly had a mammoth £87m release clause in his previous contract and the Spanish giants have raised it to €100 in the new contract.
The goalkeeper had been linked with a number of clubs and was being considered as a natural replacement of Manchester United shot stopper David De Gea. But with this extension, Atleti have secured his future for another four years.
Oblak said, “I’m very happy to have signed a contract extension and to be here. I’m going to defend these colours to the best of my abilities and continue working hard.”
Diego Simeone’s side got crashed out of the Champions League following their round of 32 defeat to Juventus and are also 11 points behind league leaders Barcelona in the La Liga.
Since his arrival from Benfica in 2014, Oblak has been the undisputed choice in the Atletico goal and has reached a different level in the last couple of years.
